Speaking Topic 1     Job Interview Hints

1. Some of the reasons you fail a job interview will have nothing to do with you.

2. Many job advertisements and some interviews are fake.

a) Some organizations and businesses have rules that they have to choose from a selection of candidates. In truth, they have already chosen who they want.

b) Employment agencies are businesses. One way they can look busy, like a popular restaurant, is to churn many fake jobs and even fake interviews.

3. Many interviewing panels do not choose the best candidate. This is because:

a) They are lazy or incompetent. I have been interviewed by people who have not even read my CV.

b) They don’t really know what they want. They are on a fishing expedition.

c) They are prejudiced or ignorant. They think you are too young, or too old, not experienced, or too experienced, or black or white. You are too pretty or you are too ugly. They think you are too honest or too corrupt. You say something  that gives them a bad memory. They think you might take their job one day ….

4. In the end you just have to do your best and hope you are lucky. Be very alert to the body language of the interviewers, and adapt quickly if you seem to displease them.

5. A job interview is NOT for telling the story of your life. A job interview is ONLY for explaining how you can add value to the company or organization.

6. Before the interview, find out as much as possible about the company or organization. What do they really need? What do you have which will help what the employer needs? Be ready to explain.

7. Remember, you are also choosing your employer. Do you really want to work for these people?
