Speaking Topic 2 – An Interesting Idea - Hints

Task:

You have 3 minutes to tell us about an interesting idea. Explain why it is interesting to you. Persuade us that it is interesting for everyone.

Hints:

1.  4-7-8 breathing [breath in to a count of 4, hold for a count of 7, breath out to a count of 8] – this will calm you before you speak

2. Keep eye contact

3. Pause between phrases

4. Take your time.

5. Relax. Smile sometimes.

6. Don’t read from notes. If necessary, glance at notes, remember a sentence, then look up and speak to your listeners.

7. Always plan your speech before you speak. List speaking points. Practice if you have time.

8. Listeners don’t have your memories. Give them a context. Explain from their point of view, not yours.

9. Don’t try to have too many ideas in one speech.

10. Finish with something listeners will remember.
